I can see all the influencers in Instagram only speaking about the Kolkata Rape case, about how the laws are not strict enough in India thereby resulting in too many rape cases, but would stricter laws alone really solve the problems? I don't see how this would make any difference as rapes are not done by these men simply to satiate their sexual desires, there is a larger problem here these men are toxic, narcissistic and enjoy the sadistic pleasure of controlling a woman, of hurting a girl or murdering her and then putting the entire blame on her, their brains have been poisoned with the thoughts that they are in every way superior compared to the woman and the women around them are purely meant for their pleasure.
Coming back to the laws, are they enough? in paper they are not. Everything depends on how strictly these laws are implemented, which would be done only when the perpetuator is a common man with no one or no money to back him up? what if he is a VIP what if he is a son of a huge business man? someone belonging to the family of a top bureaucrat or is himself one? what if is he from the family of a minister or an MP or MLA or is one of them, would the harshest of punishments that we demand for rapists apply on them? would the police then deliver justice to the victim or just close the case? if they would just close the case and when such people are always above the law and order of our country are we truly safe from any crime?
So what is the solution? I don't know. Yes every woman can do their best to defend their girls and teach their boys the right value system? you not only teach your girls self defense and arm them with pepper spray and Swiss knives but you also teach your sons how to treat a girl, you also teach your sons about consent, you also teach your sons to mind their own business and that not every girl out there is been created to satiate his sexual needs.
Before bringing up stricter laws and harsher punishments if our system was good enough to take accountability for the crimes and apply the same law to every criminal that would be great, that itself would deter many from committing crimes like this!! Because no matter how harsh the punishments are and how strict the laws are our system is out there protecting the VIPs not the innocent victim. Taking the example of Kolkata itself I have been watching a couple of videos and podcasts which have chronologically listed what happened and this is clearly a case of protecting the criminal.
1. The lady doctor who is a 2nd year PG student is chest medicine completes her daily rounds, has some food and decides to take some rest as she is not needed now. due to lack of facilities for her to rest she retires into the seminar hall to catch up on some sleep.
2. She is not up and about for her morning rounds, so a few colleagues come looking for her and find her half naked, raped and murdered in the seminar hall.
3. They alert the college and hospital authorities who inform the police and call up her parents by about 11 am the next morning stating their daughter is seriously unwell and they need to come to the hospital ASAP
4. On repeatedly questioning they tell her parents she has committed suicide during the night.
5. The way she was found, half naked, her legs wide open, her pelvic and hip bones broken and injuries and scratch marks all over her body, tell me which human being would commit suicide this way.
6. The parents were not apparently allowed to see her body for nearly 3 hours after they arrived.
7. the parents, other colleagues and classmates of the girl claim the hospital tried their best to convince everyone this was a suicide and the police were also ready to agree and close the case
8. The post mortem was not initiated by the hospital until all the students protested and that too was done by the same hospital
9. The CCTV camera of the seminar was conveniently not working
10. the police catch a guy who was a civic volunteer, a thin and lanky guy who had no injury or any sort of a mark in his body to suggest that the girl could have fought back and caused him some minor injuries at least.
11. Almost 150 mg of semen was found in her during post mortem which is practically impossible for one man to ejaculate
15. On the night of 14th Aug when the women of Kolkata carried on a protest, mobs entered the RG kar hospital in trucks and partially destroyed the hospital, thereby wiping out potential evidence? where was the police then?
16. The college principal makes an insensitive remark "who asked the girl to go and rest alone in the seminar hall at the late hours of the night" on being asked to resign, he resigns and is immediately placed as a principal in another college
So is this guy who was caught the real culprit or a scape goat? even if he was the real one where are the others? this was clearly a gang rape who is the college, the police and the Kolkata state govt trying to protect? Looking at all the above points where so many authorities, police, govt and every stake holder is coming forward to protect the criminal is stricter punishment for the rapist alone going to make a difference? who is going to give the right criminal the right punishment? before asking for stricter punishment for any crime,I am asking when is there going to be an equal implementation of law and order for all citizens of this country. When is that culture going to seep into our system. Let,s all mull on this until the next update on this case comes up.
Why is it important for the societies mindset to change even more than the punishment to crime? because the rape is also a result of the societal mind set? Do you know how many sexual assault and rape cases in this country goes unreported simply because there is no one supporting the victim? simply because its within the family? there are uncles raping their neices, fathers raping their daughters, sons raping their mothers, brothers their sisters and husbands raping their wives, Would these stop just with a harsher punishments? who would go and report this crime? specially when even the other women of the family dont come forward in support of the victim?
If I walk down wearing a pair of shorts or a short dress or even a sleevless dress its the women around me who come forward before anyone else to dress appropriately? what is appropriate who decides? why do these women never come forward in support of a girl when they see her being eve teased? I strongly feel nothing will change until our mindset changes, the way we raise our sons changes. All men are not bad, a boy baby is not born with such a sick mentality so where do we go wrong in the middle? who will address that?
As a girl mom I would like to ask this world what more can I do to protect her? send her to a karate class? arm her with a pepper spray, roll her up in huge curtains and bedsheets before sending her out? what are the mother of the boys going to do? why not promise ourselves to give a better value system to our children and make this world a better place for them to live in?
