Nuwra eliya, a beautiful and quaint little hill station on the central highlands of Srilanka is a must visit. No matter what kind of a traveller you have, this place has something to offer you. Here are a list of some of the most interesting and unforgetable things you can do in this town, some of them were experienced by us while others are just suggestions
Tea plantations: Whenever you visit any hill station with tea cultivation, visiting a plantation is a no brainer. You get to learn the complete process of from the farm to the table with regards to the tea, you get to learn a lot about the lives and everyday activities of the workers of the plantation which is a humbling experience in itself and ofcourse some amazing pictures surrounded by these plantations as far as the eye can see.
Waterfall chasing: If you are here during monsoon or post that, you would be inadvertently chasing waterfalls , which is what happened with us. This is a place which recieves rainfall through out the year and this time too it practically poured every evening. the result is a lot of tiny waterfalls and hidden gems which would be missing in the summer. Lovers leap waterfalls, Glen falls, Bomboru ella falls, Devon falls, etc are just a few of the many waterfalls that dot the landscapes of Nuwra Eliya.
Send a postcard from one of the Oldest post office of Srilanka: The Nuwra Eliya post office is arguably the oldest post office in Srilanka and also one of he most beautiful looking colonial buildings of this town. If you are around on a working day, dont forget to send yourslef or a loved one back home a post card, This in my opinion is one of the most beautiul souvenirs you could get.
Visit the Sita Amman temple: This temple holds a lot of significance for Hindus as it happens to be the place where Goddes Sita stayed as long as she was in Srilanka as Ravana's Captive. The surrounding forest area is believed to be Ashoka Vatika (Refer Ramayana). This also is believed to be the spot where lord Hanuman Spots sita and Conveys Lord Ram's message to her. There is a pretty large footprint on a rock there which is believed to be that of lord Hanuman. Other than this the temple itself is extremely scenic and beautiful and thats reason enough to visit. And oh yes people of all faiths are welcome here.
Chill at the Victoria park & Gregory lake: Just want a scenic place to take a stroll or chill by after a few packed days, this is for you. The park has fairly large enough places to just sit and chill, take a picnic there, let your kids play around. just like a lake or park in any other part of this world. these places give you the much needed breather from the sightseeing rush.
Trek to the world's end: The world's end is the point that you reach after a 9 km trek at the Horton plains national park. starting by 5 am in the morning this trek is a must do if you are used to hikes and treks. with good chance of spotting a lot of endemic birds, samba deer and leapords and some extremely scenic views the Horton plains is home to some of the most beautiful sights of Srilanka.
A day trip to Ella: Ella is yet another charming town about 60 kms from Nuwra Eliya which is home to some of the most famous landmarks of Srilanka. on a day trip you can probably cover a few of them depending on your energy levels. This town also has a very good restaurant and cafe culture and gives you a very Bali kind of vibe. When here do not miss the Hike to the famous 9 arch bridge and the Ravana Ella water falls. If time permits you can also hike up the little Adams peak which offers some stunning vistas of the entire town around. The caves behind the Ravana Ella falls where the first set of Caves where Ravana hid Sita as soon as he landed in Srilanka with her.
Visit the Hakgala Botanical gardens: The second largest botanical garden in Srilanka was established in mid 19th century by the British as an experimental cultivation unit, today it serves as a beautiful botanical garden for the tourists with a host of trees and plants both from Srilanka and from other countries. It also serves as one of the best places for photoshoots. Acording to Ramayana this place also happens to be a part of Ashoka Vatika, where Sita used to Reside as a captive of Ravana
